About the series

What it is

MX is a series of hermetic circular connectors of the 3CX type (general requirements of GJB 1433): the receptacle with a sintered-glass insulator separates two media, the plug is threaded, termination is by soldering. The receptacle shell is nickel-plated brass for soldering into a wall or stainless steel 304/316L for welding. The series is used on sealed containers, vacuum chambers and systems, electronic instruments with gas-filled housings — wherever many circuits must pass through a wall without losing hermeticity.

Shell sizes and contacts

  • MX12 — 2, 3 and 4 contacts Ø1 mm; thread M12×0.75; gold-plated stainless steel receptacle.
  • MX15 — 2, 4, 6 and 8 contacts Ø1 and Ø1.5 mm; thread M17×1.
  • MX23 — 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8A, 12 and 19 contacts Ø1…4 mm; thread M24×1.
  • MX28 — 2, 6, 12, 16, 24 and 31 contacts Ø1…4.5 mm; thread M30×1.
  • MX33 — 4A/B, 4XA/XB, 8, 9, 10, 16, 16A, 19, 21, 26, 37 and 55 contacts Ø1…4.5 mm; thread M36×1.5.
  • MX47 — 92 contacts Ø1 mm; thread M48.5×1.5.

Designation and mounting

The designation MX23J8ZH-D13 reads: shell size (23), J — pins or K — sockets, number of contacts (8), Z — receptacle or T — plug, H — standard receptacle or C — through-wall receptacle, feature code (D13 — cable hole Ø13 mm, D14L — long tail for a Ø14 mm cable, A — key position). Receptacles are made with a square flange (ZH, through-wall ZC), with a jam nut behind or in front of the panel (ZH2, ZH3, ZC3), with a round flange (MX33, MX47), in stainless steel with a round flange (ZH4, ZC6, ZH5) and on KF and CF vacuum flanges — see the KF series.

Ratings

Current per contact from 5 A (Ø1 mm) to 60 A (Ø4.5 mm), derated when there are more than 16 contacts: 80 % for 17–32, 70 % for 33–55, 60 % for 56–100 contacts. Contact resistance from 15 mΩ (Ø1 mm) to 3 mΩ (Ø4.5 mm). Insulation resistance at least 1000 MΩ (at least 50 MΩ in humid conditions), test voltage 1000 V (500 V humid), rated voltage 400 V (250 V humid).

Leak rate not more than 1×10⁻⁴ Pa·cm³/s at 10⁻² Pa, pressure resistance 1 MPa for soldered shells and 10 MPa for welded shells. Temperature −55…+125 °C, vibration 10–2000 Hz at 100 m/s², shock 250 m/s², 500 mating cycles.

What it replaces

Glass-sealed hermetic circular connectors with threaded coupling of other makers — by shell size, number and diameter of contacts, mounting style and shell material. MX inserts and Y50X/Y50EX connectors are also mounted on KF vacuum flanges — that is the KF series.

Questions and answers

How does MX differ from an ordinary circular connector?

The MX receptacle is a hermetic feedthrough: the contacts are sealed in sintered glass, the shell is soldered or welded into the wall, the leak rate is 1×10⁻⁴ Pa·cm³/s or better. An ordinary circular connector is sealed only at the mating interface.

How do I read MX23J8ZH-D13?

MX23 — shell size with an M24×1 thread, J — pins, 8 — number of contacts, Z — receptacle, H — standard (not through-wall), D13 — Ø13 mm cable hole in the mating plug. A through-wall receptacle is marked ZC.

What current do the contacts carry?

From 5 A at Ø1 mm to 60 A at Ø4.5 mm. With more than 16 contacts the current is derated: 80 % for 17–32, 70 % for 33–55 and 60 % for 56–100 contacts.

Brass or stainless steel?

A nickel-plated brass shell is soldered into the wall and withstands 1 MPa; a 304/316L stainless steel shell is welded and withstands 10 MPa. Vacuum chambers and aggressive media call for steel.

How do I mount MX on a vacuum chamber?

On a KF quick-release flange per ISO 2861: single- and double-ended MX12…MX47 receptacles on KF10…KF50 flanges are the KF series.

What is the operating temperature?

−55…+125 °C; at 90–95 % humidity the ratings are specified separately: 250 V rated voltage, 500 V test voltage, 50 MΩ insulation.
